Dr. Listrom obtained his dental qualification from the University of Saskatchewan. This was followed by a general practice residency at the University Hospital in Saskatoon. After two more years of general practice, he entered oral surgery training at the University of Toronto, where he completed his specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Anaesthesia in 1981. He was awarded a University of Toronto Fellowship in 1982 and a Medical Research Council Fellowship from 1982 – 1984. In 1984 Dr. Listrom obtained his Master of Science degree by thesis in the field of bone biology from the University of Toronto. He was part of the teaching staff in the resident training programme in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at that university for over twenty years, the last ten of those years as an Assistant Professor. He continues to teach part time and is a clinical instructor in the Oral Surgery and Prosthodontic post graduate clinics at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry.

He is the former head of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Credit Valley Hospital and he retains staff appointments at Trillium Health Partners (Credit Valley, Trillium and Queensway Hospitals), Halton Health Care (Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital) and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab Hospital.

Dr. Listrom has been involved with implant related research and teaching since the introduction of osseointegrated implants to North America. He has published several articles in peer reviewed journals and lectures on implant related topics locally, nationally and internationally, He is one of the first Canadian Fellows of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and is the director of the Mississauga-Oakville ITI Study Club.
