The CVOS Oral Surgery Approach to Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a supplementary procedure that can be used if your jawbone quality and quantity is lacking for dental implant procedures. Our surgeons will conduct a bone graft to increase the amount of bone in the jaw where support is needed.

Different Degrees of Bone Grafting

At CVOS Oral Surgery, our surgeons are able to replace your missing or damaged bone while using your body’s natural healing process to promote bone growth with a bone graft. This process provides a strong foundation for the placement of any future implants, allowing you to once again enjoy the foods you love and regain your confidence when it comes to your smile.

The Bone Grafting Procedure

Bone grafting is an effective method for repairing and filling in the bone structure where implants are to be placed. Preferably, your own bone can be used from your hip, tibia, or back of your jaw. This method is known as an autograft and can increase support in the jaw to promote faster healing.

Our surgeons also use special membranes that dissolve under the gum to protect the bone graft and promote bone regeneration.

While bone grafts are associated with implant procedures, they can also be used for tumour surgery, congenital defects, and traumatic injuries.

Sinus lift surgery and socket preservation are 2 common bone grafting procedures that our surgical team at CVOS Oral Surgery perform.

Depending on the nature of the deficiency, the grafting required may be more substantial.

Sinus Lift Surgery

Sinus lift surgery is a treatment your dentist may recommend when you want to get dental implants but do not have the sufficient jaw bone to accommodate the implant. A sinus lift transforms or lifts up the maxillary sinus to make room for a new bone placement.

Without sufficient jawbone your dental implant would not be able to anchor properly resulting in low performance for tasks such as chewing. There can be several reasons why you experience bone loss in your jaw:

Sinus lift surgery is utilized to clear the way for dental implant placement and an option for people with insufficient bone growth.

Socket Preservation

When you damage and lose a tooth or have it extracted, socket preservation maintains bone volume following the extraction in preparation for a dental implant placement or a fixed partial denture. If your implant procedure is delayed socket preservation is a great way to preserve the site of your implant while you wait.

Maintaining a Healthy Jawbone

Maintaining a healthy jawbone is extremely important. If it deteriorates due to injury or missing teeth, your smile may not be the only thing affected over time.

Some of the possible consequences include:

  • The remaining teeth may drift, loosen or become misaligned
  • Your facial profile may collapse
  • Lip support becomes limited
  • Your skin may wrinkle around the mouth
  • Your other facial features can become distorted
  • You may experience jaw pain, facial pain, and headaches
  • Difficulty speaking and communicating
  • You may be unable to chew properly and comfortably
  • Your sinuses may expand
