When you think about “oral surgery,” your mind may immediately jump to a procedure involving your teeth, like wisdom tooth removal or dental implants. Keeping your mouth’s skin and soft tissue in mind is essential and can benefit your overall oral health.
Our team of oral pathologists at CVOS Oral Surgery can examine and diagnose suspicious lumps and sores in the mouth to look for signs of oral cancer. It is advisable to perform regular self-exams to identify potential issues early on with most forms of cancer.

Why Is Oral Pathology Important?
The lining of the inside of your mouth is a special type of smooth skin that is coral pink in colour and when the appearance of this skin changes, it can be a possible warning sign of oral cancer.
There are several symptoms that could indicate the beginning of oral cancer:
- Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
- A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
- A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of your mouth
- Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
- Difficulty in chewing or swallowing
These symptoms may be detected on your lips, cheeks, palate, or gums around the teeth, tongue, face, and/or neck.
It is important to note that pain is not always associated with oral cancer. However, if you begin to experience any facial or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason, you may be at risk for oral cancer and opting for a check-up is a good decision.
Your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems. Do not ignore any suspicious lumps or sores.
