Being Prepared for Surgery
When receiving a partial or complete denture, some patients may require minor oral surgical procedures first to ensure their maximum level of comfort. Dentures are prosthetics that fit against the gums and look and function as natural teeth.
The underlying bone may need to be smoothed out and reshaped to ensure the best fit for dentures. Sometimes, extra bone may have to be removed before placing dentures. That preparation of your mouth before placing a denture is called pre-prosthetic surgery.
One or more of the following procedures may need to be performed to prepare your mouth for a denture:
- Bone smoothing and reshaping
- Removal of excess bone
- Bone ridge reduction
- Removal of excess gum tissue
- Exposure of impacted teeth
